Conversation language classes for adults.
Forget about all the rules for verbs and grammar that caused you such headaches at school when you learnt a foreign language. Sign up for a conversation language class, and relax into the chat and laughs as you try to express yourself with a whole new set of vocabulary!

Unfortunately many of us have not so pleasant memories of language classes from our school days. The endless lists of vocabulary, the charts with verbs, the rules of grammar, and difficult passages of translation. Well the problem with a lot of that is that it was based on the written language as opposed to the spoken word. While we were all busy scribbling in our notebooks we probably lost sight of the fact that we were studying a language and a medium for communication. So how about changing this approach now you are an adult, and getting down to what languages are really all about.... conversing!

Conversation classes are an instantly refreshing way to change your approach to language learning. You can now use the vocabulary you learn to actually communicate with other people and have a two-way conversation that has meaning and purpose. And this is the really fun part about conversation classes! When two beginners are trying to get across their point and results can be very strange and often hilarious. Now most teachers will not set out with this aim in mind, but if you get a group of novices in the one room the mistakes will probably form the highlight of the class. Mistakes are also what we learn best from, so you can be guaranteed that a blunder confusing two similar sounding words with completely different meanings will never be forgotten by the class members!

Have a good look at what language classes are available in your area and decide what you want to get out of it, and also how much time you have to put into it. You can attend just a weekly class for an hour on one evening that is not going to take up much of your time, but maybe you won’t get any opportunity outside of this class to work on your language skills or make any improvement. Instead you may wish to attend a longer class, or even a group that meets more that once a week. If you have the time this is a super way of immersing yourself in the language and will be a good kick-start for your learning.

Summer or residential classes can also be very worthwhile. I spent a week at a residential Irish language course in County Donegal a few years ago and was absolutely amazed at the amount I could remember when I was re-immersed again a language I hadn’t used since my school days. A course like this also allows you to enjoy the social side of the language and really use it outside of the classroom.

Ask about the classes you are interested in and see if they have any interaction outside of the classroom. My friend’s Italian class often meet for food or drinks, and have even taken trips to Italy in the summer to practice their skills on the unsuspecting natives! Whatever class you choose, have fun and be ready to laugh and enjoy the whole experience!
