Owning a pet is a big responsibility, as you need to take care of your pet, feed it, look after its health, and, in general, giving it the best possible care. One of the main responsibilities dog owners have is to train and discipline their four-legged members of the family.

Proper dog and puppy training is very important, as it is where you learn to communicate with your pet using special commands, sounds or gestures. If you do it right, you will have a great friend and a companion.

When your dog is well trained and knows what you expect from it, the dog is more relaxed, happy and almost never causes problems, such as random aggression toward other dogs or even humans, chewing on furniture, barking way too much and other signs that indicate an unhappy dog. If your dog is happy, you will be happy too, as all you will have to do is enjoy the time you spend together with your well trained pet.

Training your dog or puppy is not difficult, as long as you know how to do it and have the patience that such coaching requires. If you have never trained a dog before, you can take a look at online classes that provide general tips and teach training techniques.

Start training your puppy as early as possible. If you wait too long, your dog will think unacceptable behavior is the norm. A small puppy understands that you are the boss, and that you will tell it how exactly it should behave, act and react to different situations.

If you bring a small puppy home, the first training you should give is house training. No one likes the house to be a mess, but it will take some training before the puppy understands that it is not supposed to go potty inside. One really good tip about house training we can give you is to watch your puppy carefully. Puppies always spend some seconds sniffing around on the floor when they are about to go potty, especially after they have just been eating or drinking water. If you see your new pet do that, lift him and take him outside. Wait till they do whatever they need to do, then bring them back in.

Another problem people encounter when having a small puppy is chewing. Puppies change their baby teeth for normal ones just like humans do, and their gums itch a little when it happens, so the puppy is looking for something to chew on. Buying enough chew toys is something you will have to do, if you want to avoid damage to your furniture and shoes.

Once the puppy is a bit older, about three to four months, you can start teaching him commands such as sit, give a paw and everything else you wish him to learn. Start with the most basic commands, as the puppy is like a small child – they cannot learn everything at the same time, and they also learn little by little.

The best way to train your dog or puppy to perform some special commands is the positive reward. A small piece of a delicious snack, petting, and an encouraging intonation in your voice can do wonders.

If you bring home an adult dog, the training will be more difficult, as the dog has already developed a personality and has been trained by its previous owner. This does not mean that you will be unable to train it – quite the opposite; older dogs will understand you even better. It might take some time, but if you put enough time and effort into training your dog, you will be very happy together.
