Take a plumbing course to get out of those sticky situations around the house
Plumbing is a trade and a very useful one at that. As with any trade, when a big problem arises the regular man on the street cannot compete with the level of knowledge and expertise of a qualified tradesman. But when the small things go wrong and your house almost grinds to a stop due to a basic problem, wouldn’t you like to have some general knowledge to hopefully rectify the situation? And at worst, knowing a bit will inform your decision on whether to tackle the problem on your own, or to accept it is serious and call in a professional.
Enrolling in a basic plumbing course will introduce you to the key concepts needed to keep your average household plumbing system in order. Being able to fix a basic problem will avoid the cost of calling out a plumber. In my experience it is the call-out charge that costs the most, and usually the plumber can fix the problem in minutes. But apart from the obvious financial benefit, avoiding the shear inconvenience when part of your plumbing system is not working is far more important.
Getting hold of a plumber at times such as bank holiday weekends, or Christmas time, can be a real nightmare. Not to mention during adverse weather conditions when essential pipes give up. During the last snowfall our heating system stopped working. Not a peep out of it. Looking back on it, it was not working too well for a while, but typically it took the freezing conditions to kill it completely. Getting a plumber to come to a remote area in bad driving conditions was no mean feat. It turned out to be a relatively minor problem, and we were told the warning signs to keep an eye out for in the future. All in all, an expensive and cold experience.
Along with solving unexpected problems, having a level of basic knowledge should also have the added benefit of providing you with an ability to do some preventative maintenance on your system. Keeping an eye on operations and knowing how your system should be running will enable you to spot any irregularities. Investigating anything unusual at an early stage should mean a major problem is avoided. Prevention is definitely better than a cure!
So check out plumbing courses in your area and get more familiar with the systems you live with. Acquiring a basic knowledge on one area will probably give you a taste for more DIY and next you will have to move on to bigger and better projects. The more knowledge we have about the homes we live in the better. After all, for many people who are lucky enough to own their own homes, this is the single bigger purchase they will ever make. Therefore it is essential you look after your asset and keep it in top condition. Investigate where there is a good plumbing course near you and get up to speed so you are not left in the cold in the next snow storm!
